Sabrina Fitzpatrick gave
her grandparents the best news she could over the phone on
Wednesday night.
Minutes after being named Miss Teen
Canada Scholarship at the Canada Pageants Corporation National
Competition at the Hilton Niagara Fallsview Hotel, the
16-year-old from St. John's, Nfld. was on her cell phone with
her grandparents to share her win with them.
"They're
very proud," Fitzpatrick says while trying to let it sink in
that she is the new national title-holder.
Fitzpatrick, who is the first Miss Teen Canada
Scholarship from Newfoudland, says she's elated to bring the
title back to the Maritime province.
"It feels excellent," she
says. "It's so great. (It's) a little province. sometimes
people forget (about.) There's such great people there. (This)
shows you it doesn't matter where you come from, you can do
great things."
Fitzpatrick says she was going to
celebrate her win by going to the Hard Rock Cafe in the Falls
followed by a trip to Canada's Wonderland before she and her
family make the long drive back to St. John's.
It was
a great night for Newfoundland and Labrador, as Kristen
Parsons, another Newfoundland native, took the Miss Canada
Scholarship title.
Parsons, 20, from Wabush, Labrador,
says she was shocked to win.
"I'm still taking it all
in," she says.
"I wanted to speak about my platform
(bullying.) Just to speak was the best part. Winning was the
icing (on the cake). I can't wait to celebrate this with my
family."
She says she's overjoyed to make history for
Newfoundland by becoming the first Miss Canada Scholarship.
"I'm excited for the girls (who will be in following
pageants)."
Parsons says she plans on taking her
platform of bullying across the country.
"Bullying is
so silent. It's silent because we're scared to talk about it."
Other winners on the night were Madison Lindstrom, of
Calgary, who won Miss Preteen Canada Scholarship, Stephanie
Main, of Calgary, who won Ms. Canada, and Irene
Serena-Sellitto, of Peel Region, who won Mrs. Canada.
